Limits of Lieder
Where does Lieder begin and end? What makes a Lied a Lied? This program presents a spectrum of songs: from Sturm und Drang, through the French salons, to the complex turn-of-the-century compositions, and finally to the operatic arias that sit on the fringes. Each set presents a different song tradition: Italian romance, Eastern European song, French mélodie, and German Lied. In this way, the listener takes a journey to the limits of Lieder. Composers: Lysenko, Rachmaninoff, Bellini, Verdi, Chaminade, Duparc, Schubert, and Strauss.
